Dictation without a subscription
If you dictate every day, a $12 to $15 monthly plan quietly turns into several hundred dollars over a few years. On a Mac with Apple Silicon you can avoid that: a couple of dictation apps sell a licence you pay for once, and macOS includes a free one. This page lists those options, does the sums, and then covers the part sales pages tend to skip: what a one-time licence leaves out. We make Voice Monkeys, one of the pay-once apps below, so the limits of our own licence are listed as plainly as anyone else's.
One-time and free options on a Mac
| Option | Price | Macs covered | Requirements | Also on |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Voice Monkeys | $25 once | 1 (can be moved) | Apple Silicon (M1 or newer), macOS 14+ | Windows, Linux, Intel Mac as a subscription |
| VoiceInk Solo | $25 once | 1 | Apple Silicon, macOS 14.4+ | iOS app |
| VoiceInk Personal | $39 once | 2 | Apple Silicon, macOS 14.4+ | iOS app |
| VoiceInk Extended | $49 once | 3 | Apple Silicon, macOS 14.4+ | iOS app |
| macOS Dictation | Free | Any Mac where it is offered | Built into macOS | Apple devices |
| Superwhisper free tier | $0 | See their page | See their page | Windows, iOS, Android |
Both paid apps in the table do speech recognition on the Mac itself, which is why they ask for Apple Silicon. Superwhisper's free tier is not a one-time purchase, it is simply free; its site says it includes unlimited Whisper models and more than 100 languages, and its paid Pro tier is a separate question.
The arithmetic
| After | $25 once | $12 a month | $15 a month | $96 a year |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 3 months | $25 | $36 | $45 | $96 |
| 6 months | $25 | $72 | $90 | $96 |
| 1 year | $25 | $144 | $180 | $96 |
| 2 years | $25 | $288 | $360 | $192 |
| 3 years | $25 | $432 | $540 | $288 |
The columns are real list prices: $12 a month matches Wispr Flow Pro billed annually and the monthly Voice Monkeys cloud plan, $15 is Wispr Flow Pro billed monthly, and $96 a year is the yearly Voice Monkeys cloud plan. At $12 a month, a $25 licence has paid for itself a little after the second month. The full plan-by-plan breakdown is in Wispr Flow pricing.
The sums only favour paying once if the app does what you need. A $25 app you stop using after a week costs more than a month of a subscription you cancel.
What a one-time licence does not include
- Every future version, in some cases. The Voice Monkeys licence covers all updates of version 1; it does not promise what a future major version will cost. VoiceInk's page says lifetime updates. Read the exact wording on whichever app you buy.
- Extra Macs. One licence, one Mac. Two Macs cost $50 with Voice Monkeys or $39 with VoiceInk Personal. A Voice Monkeys licence can be moved to a new Mac.
- Other operating systems. A Mac licence does not cover a Windows laptop you buy later. Voice Monkeys on Windows, Linux and Intel Macs is a cloud plan at $12 a month or $96 a year.
- A phone. Voice Monkeys has no phone app at all. VoiceInk has an iOS app; check its page for how that is priced.
- Optional cloud features. If an app offers anything that runs on a server, check whether it is part of the one-time price or billed separately.
- Files and meetings. Voice Monkeys is live dictation only; it does not transcribe recordings or meetings.
Choosing between the two pay-once apps
On one Mac the price is identical, so the decision rests on other things. VoiceInk is built in public on GitHub, has multi-Mac bundles that are cheaper from the second Mac on, and has an iPhone app. Voice Monkeys is not open source and has no phone app; what it offers is hold-to-talk on right Option, 25 languages recognised by ear and mixable within a sentence, a 7-day trial without a card, and the same licence-holder can add Windows or Linux through the cloud plan. Both refund within 14 days.
The detailed comparison is in Voice Monkeys vs VoiceInk, and VoiceInk alternatives covers the rest of the field. To try Voice Monkeys, download it and dictate a real email in your first session: “Hi Sam, the deposit of 300 dollars is paid, the keys are with the neighbour at number 14.”
If your Mac has an Intel chip
None of the paid pay-once apps above runs on an Intel Mac in the same way. You can check your chip under Apple menu > About This Mac: the Chip line reads Apple M1, M2 and so on for Apple Silicon, while the Processor line names an Intel chip on older models.
On Intel, the no-subscription route is the free built-in Dictation, set up through the Mac dictation guide. Superwhisper's site says Intel Macs work best with its cloud models. Voice Monkeys on Intel is the $12 monthly or $96 yearly cloud plan, which is a subscription and therefore not what this page is about.
Buying once without regret
- Confirm the chip is Apple Silicon (About This Mac).
- Check your macOS version: 14 or later for Voice Monkeys, 14.4 or later for VoiceInk.
- Free up disk space for the speech model; the Voice Monkeys model is about 600 MB, downloaded once.
- Use the trial or free tier for a full working day before paying.
- Write the refund deadline in your calendar the day you pay: 14 days for both apps.
- Read the update wording on the licence, so a future major version is not a surprise.
- Count your Macs now, not after you buy, and compare single and bundle prices.
If you would rather see how a pay-once app compares with a free-tier app, Voice Monkeys vs Superwhisper works through the break-even point.
Questions and answers
Is there a dictation app for Mac with no subscription?
Yes. On Apple Silicon Macs, Voice Monkeys costs $25 once for one Mac, and VoiceInk costs $25, $39 or $49 once for one, two or three Macs. macOS Dictation is built in and free.
How long until a one-time licence pays for itself?
Against a $12 a month plan, a $25 licence is cheaper after a little over two months. Against $15 a month, after under two months.
Does a one-time licence include updates?
It depends on the app. The Voice Monkeys licence includes all updates of version 1. VoiceInk says lifetime updates. Read the wording before you buy.
Is there a one-time option for Windows?
Voice Monkeys on Windows is a cloud plan at $12 a month or $96 a year, not a one-time licence. Windows voice typing (Windows key + H) is free and built in, but needs an internet connection.
Can I move a one-time licence to a new Mac?
A Voice Monkeys licence covers one Mac at a time and can be moved. For other apps, check their licence terms.
