Voice Monkeys vs Superwhisper

Superwhisper and Voice Monkeys overlap on the Mac and on Windows, then go separate ways: Superwhisper also runs on phones and has a free tier, while Voice Monkeys sells a $25 one-time Mac licence and also covers Linux. Superwhisper's Pro price was not clear on its site when this page was written (6 November 2026), so instead of guessing a number, the cost section gives you a break-even rule to apply once you read their current price. Read the table as a list of what each company states, not as a scorecard. Neither site publishes an accuracy figure, and this page does not invent one. Where a cell says see their page, Superwhisper's site did not give a clear answer on the date above.

Start with Superwhisper's free tier, honestly

If your dictation is mostly short notes, or if you speak a language that is not on the Voice Monkeys list (Japanese, Korean, Hindi, Arabic and Turkish are among the many that are missing), Superwhisper's free tier may cost you nothing, and nothing beats $25. Its site says the free plan includes unlimited Whisper models and more than 100 languages. Look up your own language on their page before deciding.

The free tier stops being the comparison once you want something only Pro unlocks: the extra cloud and local AI models, or translation into English. From that point you are weighing a recurring Pro price against a one-time $25, which is a question of arithmetic rather than taste.

Break-even: when $25 once beats a subscription

The rule is one division. Take $25 and divide it by the monthly Pro price shown on superwhisper.com. The result is the number of months after which the one-time Mac licence has cost you less. If Pro is billed per year, divide 25 by the yearly price and multiply by 12 to get the same answer in months.

Plug in the real figure from their pricing page. Two things move the result. The $25 licence covers one Apple Silicon Mac, so two Macs mean $50. And a Pro plan may cover your phone and your Windows PC as well, which the Mac licence never will. If you dictate on an iPhone every day, the subscription buys something the one-time licence simply does not offer.

Platforms decide more than price

• iPhone or Android: only Superwhisper has a phone app. Voice Monkeys has none, on any phone.
• Linux: Voice Monkeys runs on Linux with X11 (Wayland is not supported) on its cloud plan, with an optional offline model. Superwhisper's site lists Mac, Windows, iOS and Android.
• Windows: both run there. Voice Monkeys on Windows is the $12 monthly or $96 yearly cloud plan; the Windows build is new, so SmartScreen may show a warning during install.
• Intel Mac: Superwhisper says Intel Macs work best with its cloud models. Voice Monkeys on Intel is the cloud plan too. Neither gives an Intel Mac the full on-device experience.
• Apple Silicon Mac: both can transcribe on the machine itself. This is the only place the $25 licence applies.

If you split your day between, say, a MacBook at home and a Windows PC at the office, the Voice Monkeys cloud plan covers up to five computers with one dictating at a time. Check Superwhisper's page for how its plans count devices.

Languages and translation

Voice Monkeys recognises 25 languages by ear: Bulgarian, Czech, Danish, German, Greek, English, Spanish, Estonian, Finnish, French, Croatian, Hungarian, Italian, Lithuanian, Latvian, Maltese, Dutch, Polish, Portuguese, Romanian, Russian, Slovak, Slovenian, Swedish and Ukrainian. You do not choose one before speaking, and you can switch in the middle of a sentence. A line such as “Send the Angebot to Marta by Friday, bitte” is exactly the kind of mix it is built for; try your own mix during the trial and judge the result yourself.

Superwhisper lists more than 100 languages and, on Pro, translation into English. If you think out loud in Spanish but the document must be in English, that is a feature Voice Monkeys lacks: it writes what you said, in the language you said it. Choose Superwhisper if

• you want the same dictation tool on a phone and on a computer;
• your language is not among the 25 listed above;
• you need speech in one language to come out as English text;
• the free tier already covers what you dictate in a normal week;
• a 30-day refund window matters more to you than a 14-day one.

Choose Voice Monkeys if

• you dictate on one Apple Silicon Mac and want to pay $25 once and stop thinking about it;
• you work on Linux, where Superwhisper does not list an app;
• you mix two European languages in the same sentence;
• you like hold-to-talk: hold right Option, speak, release, and the text lands at the cursor in any app. A quick tap keeps it listening until the next tap, and Esc cancels.

A fair one-hour comparison

• Install Superwhisper's free tier and start the Voice Monkeys trial on the same Mac.
• Write down three things you really dictate: a chat reply, an email paragraph with a name and a number, a short to-do list.
• Dictate the same passage into both: “Hi Daniel, the March invoice is 1,240 euros, due on the 15th. Can you confirm the address on Kestrel Road?”
• Count the corrections you actually make, not the ones you merely notice. Names and numbers are where tools differ most.
• Switch Wi-Fi off and repeat, to see which setup keeps working without a connection; offline dictation on Mac explains what to watch for.
• Decide before the shorter refund window closes: 14 days for Voice Monkeys, 30 days for Superwhisper. Put the date in your calendar on day one.
