Install
Mac
Download the app, open the .dmg and move Voice Monkeys to Applications. On first launch it asks for access to the Microphone and to Accessibility (to paste the text) and downloads the speech model once (about 600 MB).
- Mac with Apple Silicon (M1 or newer)
- macOS 14 Sonoma or later
- About 600 MB for the speech model
Voice Monkeys is signed and notarized by Apple, so it opens like any other app. If macOS still refuses, open System Settings → Privacy & Security, scroll down and click “Open Anyway” next to Voice Monkeys.
Windows and Linux
Windows: run the .exe installer. Linux: run the AppImage or install the .deb package (Ubuntu, Debian). Then sign in to the app with your email and start the 7-day free trial. A card is needed to start it.
- Windows 10 or 11, 64-bit
- 64-bit Linux: AppImage, or .deb for Ubuntu and Debian
- An internet connection (an offline model is optional)
Windows may warn because the installer is new; click More info → Run anyway.
On Linux, use an X11 (Xorg) session: under Wayland, global hotkeys and automatic pasting are blocked.
Apple Silicon or Intel
How to check: Apple menu (top left) → About This Mac. “Chip: Apple M…” means Apple Silicon, “Processor: Intel…” means Intel.
Looks like you have an Intel Mac: the Mac app won't run on it.
Have an Intel Mac?
The Mac app runs only on Apple M1 and newer: an Intel Mac can't handle offline recognition. What fits an Intel Mac is the cloud version with a subscription. We're preparing it: leave your email and we'll write once, on launch day.
Dictation key
Mac
Hold the right Option key, speak and let go: the text appears where your cursor is. A quick tap starts hands-free dictation until the next tap. Esc cancels. In the app's settings you can choose the right Command key or Fn instead.
Windows and Linux
The same with the right Alt key (AltGr): hold it to dictate, tap it once for hands-free, tap again to finish. Esc cancels.
License and subscription
Mac · Apple Silicon
One payment of $25: a lifetime license for one Mac, with every update of version 1. The first 7 days are free, no card needed. The key comes by email, and you can also find it in your account.
The trial needs no card. After 7 days, dictation pauses until you enter a license key; your settings and history stay.
Cloud version (Windows and Linux)
It's a subscription: $12 a month or $96 a year, with a 7-day free trial. Speech is recognized on our server, so it runs well even on modest computers. It includes 90 hours of dictation a month, on all your computers (up to 5). Cancel any time; you keep access until the end of the period you paid for.
The trial starts with a card: if you don't cancel during the 7 days, the subscription starts and the first payment is charged. You can cancel any time in your account.
Devices
Mac · Apple Silicon
A license works on one Mac. To move it to a new one, unlink the old Mac in the app or in your account.
Cloud version (Windows and Linux)
The subscription works on all your computers (up to 5); dictation runs on one of them at a time. To make room for a new one, unlink an old computer in the app or in your account.
How do I move the crew to a new Mac?
Open the license window on the old Mac and click “Deactivate this Mac”, then enter the key on the new one. The old Mac is gone? Unlink it in your account. Or just write to us.

Cloud version (Windows and Linux)
Yes, within 14 days of any subscription payment. No questions asked: just write to support. Details are in the refund policy.
Privacy
Mac · Apple Silicon
Speech is recognized on the Mac itself, on its Neural Engine: your audio and the dictated text never leave the computer, and dictation works offline. The internet is used to download the speech model, to check the license or trial, for app updates and for crash reports, which contain no audio and no text.
Cloud version (Windows and Linux)
Your audio travels over an encrypted connection to our server in Germany (Hetzner, Falkenstein), is turned into text in memory and is then discarded. The recognition service can't even write to its disk. We store neither the audio nor the text, only how many seconds you dictated, to count the monthly hours. Details are in the privacy policy.
On Windows and Linux, if you switch recognition to this computer in the app and download the offline model once (about 640 MB), speech is recognized on the computer and the audio stays there.
