Voice Monkeys vs VoiceInk
On paper these two look almost identical: both are Mac dictation apps for Apple Silicon, both start at $25 paid once, both transcribe on the computer instead of in the cloud, and both refund within 14 days. That makes the choice come down to a handful of concrete differences, and they cut both ways. We make Voice Monkeys; everything about VoiceInk below comes from its own site, checked 6 November 2026, and where VoiceInk is the better buy we say so plainly.

Two rows deserve a second look. The update wording differs: VoiceInk says a lifetime of updates; the Voice Monkeys licence covers every update of version 1. And the macOS minimum differs by one point release: an Apple Silicon Mac on macOS 14.0 to 14.3 can run Voice Monkeys but not VoiceInk until it is updated.
Cost for the setups people actually have
| Setup | Voice Monkeys | VoiceInk |
|---|---|---|
| 1 Mac, years 1 to 3 | $25 | $25 |
| 2 Macs (desk + laptop) | $50 | $39 |
| 3 Macs | $75 | $49 |
| 1 Mac + 1 Windows PC, 3 years | $25 + ($96 x 3) = $313 | Not possible: no Windows app |
| 1 Intel Mac, 3 years | $96 x 3 = $288 (or $12 x 36 = $432 monthly) | Not possible: Apple Silicon only |
Per Mac, VoiceInk gets cheaper as you add machines: $39 / 2 = $19.50 and $49 / 3 = $16.33, against a flat $25 for Voice Monkeys. With three Macs VoiceInk saves you $26. For a single Mac the price is the same, and both stay the same in year two and three because there is no renewal.
Replacing a Mac is a different case from adding one: a Voice Monkeys licence can be moved to the new Mac. Check VoiceInk's site for how it handles a move.
Choose VoiceInk if
- You care about open source. VoiceInk is built in public on GitHub, so you or someone you trust can read the code that handles your voice. Voice Monkeys is not open source; you rely on what we publish about it.
- You have two or three Macs. $39 or $49 covers them, which is less than buying a Voice Monkeys licence for each.
- You want dictation on your iPhone too. VoiceInk lists an iOS app; Voice Monkeys has none.
- You want an optional AI pass on the text. VoiceInk's Cloud Enhancement processes the transcript (not the audio) if you switch it on. Voice Monkeys has no such step.
- You prefer the broader update promise. Lifetime updates is a wider commitment than updates within version 1.
Choose Voice Monkeys if
- You also use Windows or Linux. The same app and the same hold-to-talk gesture exist there through the cloud plan (with an optional offline model on Windows and Linux). VoiceInk is Mac and iOS only.
- You are on an Intel Mac. Voice Monkeys runs there through the cloud plan; VoiceInk does not run on Intel.
- Your Apple Silicon Mac is on macOS 14.0 to 14.3 and you cannot or do not want to update yet.
- You switch languages mid-sentence. Voice Monkeys recognises its 25 languages by ear and handles a sentence like 'Ich schicke dir the final draft morgen früh' without a setting change. If your language mix matters, test the same sentence in VoiceInk.
- You want to try before paying with nothing on file. The Mac trial runs 7 days without a card.
Using them day to day
With Voice Monkeys you hold the right Option key (Fn or right Command also work, changeable in settings), speak, and release; the text appears at the cursor in mail, a browser, Slack, a terminal or a code editor. A short tap instead of a hold keeps it listening until the next tap, which suits a long reply, and Esc discards a recording you did not mean to make. That is close to the whole interface by design.
VoiceInk's site documents its own controls and settings, so we will not paraphrase them. The useful comparison is not a feature checklist but a real session: dictate one of your own messages, for example 'Thanks Lena, I moved the review to Tuesday at 10 and added the budget sheet', into both apps in the same text field, and see which leaves you less to fix.
How to compare them in one afternoon
- Install both on the same Mac. Give each a different trigger key so only one listens at a time.
- Disconnect from the internet after both have downloaded their models, then dictate. Both are designed to work locally on Apple Silicon; confirm it on your machine.
- Dictate five real items: an email, a chat reply, a to-do list, a sentence with a surname and a number, and one paragraph of at least 100 words.
- Open Activity Monitor while dictating if your Mac has 8 GB of RAM, since VoiceInk recommends that as a minimum and you will be running two apps.
- Pick the one you corrected less, and request a refund for the other inside 14 days if you paid for it. To try Voice Monkeys, download it here.
If neither fits
If you need Android, meeting notes or 100+ languages, neither app is the right tool; look at Wispr Flow alternatives and Superwhisper alternatives for subscription options that cover phones. If you dictate only occasionally, Apple's built-in dictation costs nothing and is explained in dictation on Mac. Coming from VoiceInk and hitting a wall? VoiceInk alternatives is organised by exactly those walls.
