VoiceInk alternatives: when it makes sense to switch
VoiceInk is hard to beat on its own terms: a one-time price from $25, local transcription, and source code on GitHub. Most people who search for an alternative are not unhappy with it. They have hit a wall it does not try to climb, such as an Intel Mac, a Windows laptop, an Android phone or a macOS version below 14.4. This guide starts from those walls, shows what each alternative costs per Mac and per year, and is clear about the cases where VoiceInk stays the better choice. Product facts come from each vendor's page, checked 6 November 2026. We make Voice Monkeys, which is one of the alternatives.
What VoiceInk offers, per its site
VoiceInk sells three one-time licences: Solo at $25 for one Mac, Personal at $39 for up to two, and Extended at $49 for up to three. Each includes lifetime access and, in the site's words, a lifetime of updates. It runs only on Apple Silicon Macs with macOS 14.4 or later, and its FAQ recommends 8 GB of RAM.
Transcription happens on the device. An optional Cloud Enhancement step processes the transcribed text, never the audio. There is also an iOS app, the project is built in public on GitHub (the page does not name the licence), and purchases carry a 14-day money-back guarantee.
Stay with VoiceInk if
- You want to read or build the code. Open development is something none of the other paid apps in this article advertise on their pages.
- You own two or three Macs. $39 for two works out to $19.50 per Mac and $49 for three to about $16.33. Voice Monkeys is one Mac per licence at $25 each, so $50 for two and $75 for three.
- You also dictate on an iPhone. VoiceInk lists iOS; Voice Monkeys has no phone app.
- It already does what you need. You paid once, so there is no renewal to escape and nothing to gain by moving for its own sake.
Walls VoiceInk does not climb, and what does
| Your situation | Why VoiceInk is out | Alternatives to look at |
|---|---|---|
| Intel Mac | Apple Silicon only | Voice Monkeys cloud plan, Superwhisper with cloud models (its page says Intel Macs work best with them), macOS Dictation |
| Apple Silicon Mac on macOS 14.0 to 14.3 | Needs macOS 14.4 or later | Voice Monkeys (macOS 14+), macOS Dictation, or update macOS |
| Windows PC | Mac and iOS only | Windows voice typing, Wispr Flow, Superwhisper, Aqua Voice, Voice Monkeys cloud |
| Linux on X11 | Mac and iOS only | Voice Monkeys (cloud or optional offline model) |
| Android phone | Not listed | Wispr Flow, Superwhisper, Aqua Voice |
For the second row, updating macOS is often the simplest fix: if your Mac can run 14.4, you keep VoiceInk and lose nothing. For the Intel row, be realistic about what a new app changes. Superwhisper itself says offline models only run really well on Apple Silicon, so on Intel you are choosing whose cloud handles your audio, not unlocking local speed.
Cost by number of Macs and by years
VoiceInk's price does not change with time, so the interesting variable is how many computers you cover. Subscriptions work the other way: device counts are generous, and the years add up.
| Setup | VoiceInk | Voice Monkeys |
|---|---|---|
| 1 Apple Silicon Mac, any number of years | $25 | $25 |
| 2 Apple Silicon Macs | $39 | $50 (2 x $25) |
| 3 Apple Silicon Macs | $49 | $75 (3 x $25) |
| Intel Mac, 3 years | Not supported | $288 yearly ($96 x 3) or $432 monthly ($12 x 36) |
| Apple Silicon Mac plus a Windows PC, 3 years | No Windows app | $313 ($25 licence + $96 x 3 cloud plan) |
Per-Mac arithmetic: VoiceInk is $25 / 1 = $25, $39 / 2 = $19.50, $49 / 3 = $16.33. Voice Monkeys stays at $25 per Mac. For scale, Wispr Flow Pro billed yearly is $12 x 12 = $144 a year, or $432 over three years, and Aqua Voice Pro billed yearly is $10 x 12 = $120 a year, or $360 over three.
If you are replacing a Mac rather than adding one, a Voice Monkeys licence can be moved to the new machine. One more difference in wording: VoiceInk promises a lifetime of updates, while the Voice Monkeys Mac licence covers all updates of version 1.
Who should switch
- Mixed Mac and Windows household or office: one tool on both means learning one gesture. Options include Wispr Flow, Superwhisper, Aqua Voice and Voice Monkeys; the subscription ones are costed in Wispr Flow alternatives.
- Intel Mac you are keeping for a while: a cloud tool, or Apple's built-in dictation as described in dictation on Mac.
- Android user who wants one app on phone and laptop: Superwhisper, Wispr Flow or Aqua Voice.
- Linux developer: Voice Monkeys on X11.
- Windows-only user who just wants to try voice typing: start with the free Windows key + H; dictation on Windows covers it.
- You simply prefer a different feel: fair enough, but that is taste, and a trial will tell you more than any comparison.
If you are weighing Voice Monkeys against VoiceInk
On Apple Silicon the two overlap heavily: both cost $25 once and both transcribe on the Mac. Voice Monkeys runs the speech model on the Neural Engine, needs macOS 14 or later, downloads about 600 MB once and then works offline. You hold right Option (or Fn, or right Command), speak and release, and it types into whatever app has focus. It recognises 25 European languages by ear, mixed in one sentence if you like. The 7-day Mac trial needs no card, and refunds are available within 14 days.
What it adds is everything outside the Mac: Windows, Linux and Intel Macs through a cloud plan at $12 a month or $96 a year, covering up to 5 computers with one dictating at a time. What VoiceInk does better: open source, cheaper multi-Mac licences, and an iOS app. If the Mac-plus-PC case is yours, download Voice Monkeys; the full table is in Voice Monkeys vs VoiceInk.
How to test an alternative without giving up VoiceInk
- Do not uninstall VoiceInk. Give the new app a different activation key so the two never listen at once.
- Pick five pieces of text you actually wrote last week (an email, a commit message, a chat reply, a paragraph of notes, a list) and dictate each into both apps.
- Check the places you type most: a terminal, a browser address bar, a chat window, a spreadsheet cell. Text insertion behaves differently from field to field.
- For any cloud alternative, read where audio goes and whether it is stored before dictating anything private. The overview of dictation apps summarises this per app.
- Decide inside the refund window: 14 days for VoiceInk and Voice Monkeys, 30 days for Superwhisper.
Questions and answers
Is VoiceInk free?
Its code is developed in public on GitHub, but the licences sold on its site are paid: $25, $39 or $49 once, depending on the number of Macs.
Does VoiceInk work on Intel Macs?
No. Its page says it works only on Apple Silicon Macs with macOS 14.4 or later. On an Intel Mac, look at cloud tools or macOS Dictation.
What is a VoiceInk alternative for Windows?
The built-in Windows voice typing is free (Windows key + H, internet required). Paid options that list Windows include Wispr Flow, Superwhisper, Aqua Voice and the Voice Monkeys cloud plan.
Is there a cheaper alternative to VoiceInk?
Only the free built-in tools. Among paid apps, $25 once is the floor in this comparison, and VoiceInk is cheaper per Mac if you have two or three.
Which is more private, VoiceInk or Voice Monkeys?
On Apple Silicon both transcribe on the Mac. VoiceInk's optional Cloud Enhancement processes text only. The Voice Monkeys cloud plan for Windows, Linux and Intel Macs sends encrypted audio to a server in Germany and does not store audio or text.
