Wispr Flow alternatives: who should switch, who should stay
Wispr Flow is a capable dictation app with apps on four platforms, so the real question is rarely whether something is better in general. It is whether something fits your situation better for less money. This page sorts the alternatives by the reason people usually leave, adds up what each costs over three years using the prices on each vendor's own page (checked 6 November 2026), and ends with a short test you can run before cancelling anything. We make Voice Monkeys, one of the options here, and we point out where it is the wrong choice.
What Wispr Flow gives you today
According to its pricing page, Wispr Flow has four tiers. Free includes dictation on Mac, Windows, iOS and Android, a dictionary and snippets, with a weekly limit on words that the page does not quantify. Pro costs $15 per user per month, or $12 per month billed annually, and adds unlimited dictation and team features such as a shared dictionary and centralized billing. Growth is shown at $18 per month billed annually in the summary table, but the same page also shows $23, $26 and $33, so confirm the rate at checkout. Enterprise is priced on request.
The page lists 100+ languages, a Notetaker for meetings on Mac and Windows, an option to opt out of model training, and SOC 2 Type II and ISO 27001 certification. What it does not say is where dictation audio is turned into text. If you dictate anything sensitive, ask Wispr Flow directly instead of assuming an answer either way.
Who should stay with Wispr Flow
- You dictate on your phone as much as on your laptop. Wispr Flow covers iOS and Android next to Mac and Windows. Neither of the one-time Mac apps below covers Android, and Voice Monkeys has no phone app at all.
- Your team is on a paid workspace. Moving a team means new habits for everyone, new admin setup and rebuilding a shared dictionary. That cost never shows up in a price table.
- You rely on the Notetaker. None of the desktop dictation tools in this article replaces a meeting notetaker. Voice Monkeys, for example, types live speech at the cursor and does not transcribe meetings or audio files.
- The free weekly allowance covers you. If you never hit the cap, a paid alternative saves you nothing.
- You need more than 100 languages covered by one app. Most alternatives here list fewer; check your language on each vendor's page.
The alternatives, sorted by why you are leaving
Each row uses only what the vendor's page states. Where a page is silent, we say so.
| Alternative | Runs on | How you pay | Where speech is processed |
|---|---|---|---|
| VoiceInk | Mac with Apple Silicon (macOS 14.4+), iOS | One-time: $25 for 1 Mac, $39 for 2, $49 for 3 | Locally; optional cloud enhancement sees transcribed text only |
| Voice Monkeys | Apple Silicon Mac (macOS 14+); Windows, Linux (X11), Intel Mac via cloud | $25 once on Apple Silicon; $12 a month or $96 a year elsewhere | Neural Engine on the Mac; cloud version on a server in Germany, audio not stored |
| Superwhisper | Mac, Windows, iOS, Android | Free tier; Pro price on their page | Your choice of local or cloud models |
| Aqua Voice | Mac, Windows, iOS, Android | Free 1,000 words; Pro $10 a month yearly or $12 monthly | Not stated on the pricing page |
| macOS Dictation | Mac | Included | On the device or Siri servers, shown in Keyboard settings |
| Windows voice typing | Windows | Included | Online speech recognition, internet required |
Leaving over price: VoiceInk or Voice Monkeys on an Apple Silicon Mac, or the built-in tools if you only dictate now and then. Leaving because you want speech to stay on your computer: VoiceInk, Voice Monkeys on Apple Silicon, or Superwhisper with a local model. Leaving but keeping Android: Superwhisper and Aqua Voice are the ones here that list it.
What each option costs over one, two and three years
Subscriptions look small per month and large per term. These figures use the lowest listed price for one person, cumulative at the end of each year.
| Option | After 1 year | After 2 years | After 3 years |
|---|---|---|---|
| Wispr Flow Pro, billed monthly ($15) | $180 | $360 | $540 |
| Wispr Flow Pro, billed yearly ($12 a month) | $144 | $288 | $432 |
| Aqua Voice Pro, billed yearly ($10 a month) | $120 | $240 | $360 |
| Voice Monkeys cloud, yearly ($96) | $96 | $192 | $288 |
| VoiceInk Solo, one Mac | $25 | $25 | $25 |
| Voice Monkeys, one Apple Silicon Mac | $25 | $25 | $25 |
| Built-in dictation | $0 | $0 | $0 |
How the numbers are built: $15 x 12 = $180 a year, so three years is $540. Billed yearly, $12 x 12 = $144, and $144 x 3 = $432. Aqua Voice Pro yearly is $10 x 12 = $120, so $360 over three years. The Voice Monkeys cloud plan is a flat $96 a year, $288 over three. One-time licences stay at $25 because you pay once.
So a solo Mac user moving from Wispr Flow Pro billed yearly to a $25 licence spends $407 less over three years ($432 minus $25). Superwhisper's Pro price was not clear on its page when we checked, so it is left out; its free tier is $0.
Two caveats. The Voice Monkeys Mac licence covers all updates of version 1, while VoiceInk's page promises a lifetime of updates. And one-time licences are counted per Mac: two Macs cost $50 with Voice Monkeys (one licence each) or $39 with VoiceInk Personal.
Who should switch, and to what
- Solo writer on one Apple Silicon Mac, no phone dictation needed: a one-time app. The two are compared line by line in Voice Monkeys vs VoiceInk.
- Mac at home, Windows at work: you need something on both. Wispr Flow already does that, so only switch if the price or privacy answer matters to you. Alternatives are Superwhisper, Aqua Voice, or the Voice Monkeys cloud plan, which allows up to 5 computers with one dictating at a time.
- Linux user: of the tools here, Voice Monkeys is the one that lists Linux (X11 sessions, not Wayland).
- Occasional user who dictates an email a day: try the free built-in tools first. Setup is in dictation on Mac and dictation on Windows.
- Intel Mac owner: VoiceInk requires Apple Silicon. Superwhisper says Intel Macs work best with its cloud models, and Voice Monkeys on Intel is the cloud subscription.
Where Voice Monkeys fits, and where it does not
Voice Monkeys does one job. You hold a key (right Option on a Mac, right Alt on Windows and Linux), speak, release, and the text appears wherever the cursor is; a quick tap keeps it listening until the next tap, and Esc cancels. On an M1 or newer Mac it runs the speech model on the Neural Engine, so after a one-time download of about 600 MB it works offline. It costs $25 once, with a 7-day trial that needs no card, and recognises 25 European languages that you can mix in one sentence.
It is the wrong pick if you need a phone app, a meeting notetaker or file transcription, because it has none of those, and its Windows and Linux builds are new. If those gaps do not matter, download Voice Monkeys and run the test below against your current Wispr Flow setup. The full table is in Voice Monkeys vs Wispr Flow.
A 20-minute test before you cancel
- Keep Wispr Flow installed. Install one alternative on its trial or free tier and give it a different activation key.
- Dictate the same three things into both: a two-line chat reply, a 150-word email, and one sentence full of names and numbers, for example: 'Move the Thursday call with Priya Natarajan to 3:30 and send her the Q3 invoice for 1,240 euros.'
- Count the corrections you make by hand in each. Names, numbers and punctuation are where tools differ most.
- Dictate into the three apps you use most (mail, a browser text field, a chat app) to confirm text lands where the cursor is.
- If offline use matters, turn Wi-Fi off and repeat one dictation.
- Write down any custom dictionary words and snippets you set up in Wispr Flow, then cancel. Note the renewal date so a yearly plan does not renew the day after you switch.
Questions and answers
What is the cheapest Wispr Flow alternative?
The built-in tools on macOS and Windows are free. Among paid apps, VoiceInk Solo and Voice Monkeys for Apple Silicon Macs are $25 once, which is less than two months of Wispr Flow Pro billed monthly.
Is there a Wispr Flow alternative for Android?
Superwhisper and Aqua Voice both list Android. VoiceInk lists iOS but not Android, and Voice Monkeys has no phone app.
Can I use one alternative on both Mac and Windows?
Superwhisper and Aqua Voice list both. Voice Monkeys covers Windows and Linux through its cloud plan (up to 5 computers, one dictating at a time); on Apple Silicon Macs it is the separate $25 one-time licence.
Which alternative keeps my voice on my computer?
VoiceInk, Voice Monkeys on Apple Silicon Macs, and Superwhisper with a local model. The Voice Monkeys cloud plan sends encrypted audio to a server in Germany, converts it in memory and discards it.
Does switching save money if I already paid for a year?
Not until the renewal date, since cancelling usually does not refund the rest of a term. Use the remaining months to test an alternative properly.
