Superwhisper alternatives, chosen by the computer you own
Superwhisper sets a high bar for anyone trying to replace it: its free tier already includes unlimited Whisper models and more than 100 languages. So a switch has to be about something specific, such as how it runs on your hardware, what you pay once you outgrow the free tier, or simply a workflow you prefer. This guide works through those reasons, gives the three-year cost of each alternative with the arithmetic shown, and lists what to test. Facts about each product come from its own page, checked 6 November 2026. We make Voice Monkeys and say where it loses.
What Superwhisper's page promises
Superwhisper lists apps for Mac, Windows, iOS and Android. The Free tier includes unlimited Whisper models and 100+ languages. Pro adds cloud and local AI models plus translation into English. We could not pin down the Pro price from the page, so read it there rather than trust a figure copied into a review (including this one). Every plan comes with a 30-day refund.
Two sentences on the site matter for the hardware question: 'Intel Macs work best with Cloud models' and 'Offline models only run really well on Apple Silicon macs'. That is a candid statement, and it applies to most of the field: fast local speech recognition on a Mac is an Apple Silicon story.
Reasons to stay with Superwhisper
- The free tier works for you. Paying $25 or more to replace a free tool only makes sense if something specific is wrong.
- You dictate in a language outside the major European ones. Superwhisper lists 100+ languages. Voice Monkeys covers 25, all European; VoiceInk publishes its own list on its site.
- You want translation into English. That is listed for Superwhisper Pro. Voice Monkeys does not translate.
- You need Android. Superwhisper is one of the few tools here that list it, alongside Wispr Flow and Aqua Voice.
- You like choosing models. Picking between local and cloud models per task is part of Superwhisper's design; the one-time apps below make that choice for you.
- A long refund window matters. 30 days on every plan is the longest of the products in this article; VoiceInk and Voice Monkeys both give 14.
Pick the alternative by the computer you own
| Your computer | Realistic alternatives | What the pages say |
|---|---|---|
| Apple Silicon Mac, macOS 14.4 or later | VoiceInk, Voice Monkeys, macOS Dictation | VoiceInk transcribes locally, 8 GB RAM recommended; Voice Monkeys runs speech recognition on the Neural Engine |
| Apple Silicon Mac, macOS 14.0 to 14.3 | Voice Monkeys, macOS Dictation | VoiceInk's stated minimum is 14.4; Voice Monkeys needs 14 or later |
| Intel Mac | Voice Monkeys cloud, macOS Dictation | VoiceInk is Apple Silicon only; Voice Monkeys on Intel is the cloud plan; Wispr Flow and Aqua Voice list Mac, so check their pages for Intel support |
| Windows PC | Windows voice typing, Wispr Flow, Aqua Voice, Voice Monkeys cloud | Windows voice typing needs internet; Voice Monkeys has an optional offline model of about 640 MB |
| Linux on X11 | Voice Monkeys | The only option here that lists Linux; Wayland is not supported |
| Phone | Wispr Flow, Aqua Voice, VoiceInk (iOS) | Voice Monkeys has no phone app |
If you sit in the Intel Mac row, notice the pattern: every alternative there either sends audio to a cloud service or is Apple's own dictation. Changing apps will not get you strong offline recognition on that hardware; it changes who processes the audio and what you pay. If offline matters most, the honest advice is that the next Mac matters more than the next app.
Three-year cost, worked out
Because Superwhisper's free tier costs nothing, compare it against each paid option first, then place Pro (at whatever price its page shows on the day you check) against the rest.
| Option | Year 1 | Year 2 | Year 3 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Superwhisper Free | $0 | $0 | $0 |
| VoiceInk Solo (1 Mac) | $25 | $25 | $25 |
| VoiceInk Extended (3 Macs) | $49 | $49 | $49 |
| Voice Monkeys, Apple Silicon Mac | $25 | $25 | $25 |
| Voice Monkeys cloud, monthly ($12) | $144 | $288 | $432 |
| Voice Monkeys cloud, yearly ($96) | $96 | $192 | $288 |
| Wispr Flow Pro, billed yearly ($12 a month) | $144 | $288 | $432 |
| Aqua Voice Pro, billed yearly ($10 a month) | $120 | $240 | $360 |
The arithmetic: a monthly price times 12 gives one year, so $12 x 12 = $144, then $288 after two years and $432 after three. A yearly price is multiplied by the number of years: $96 x 3 = $288. Aqua Voice at $10 a month billed yearly is $120 a year and $360 over three. One-time licences do not grow.
To slot Superwhisper Pro in, take its monthly price and multiply by 12, 24 and 36. A useful break-even: $25 spread over 36 months is about $0.69 a month, so any subscription above that costs more than a one-time $25 licence over three years. The real question is whether the extra features (translation, model choice, phone apps) are worth the difference to you.
Who should switch, and where to
- Apple Silicon Mac, one machine, and you pay for Pro mainly for local recognition: a one-time app may cover what you actually use. Voice Monkeys vs VoiceInk helps you choose between the two.
- Several Macs in one household: VoiceInk Extended covers three Macs for $49, cheaper than three single licences of anything else here.
- Intel Mac, tired of picking models: a cloud tool or Apple's built-in dictation; the free route is covered in dictation on Mac.
- Windows only: start with Windows voice typing (free, Windows key + H), then try a paid app on its trial. Setup steps are in dictation on Windows.
- Linux desktop on X11: Voice Monkeys, through the cloud plan or its optional offline model.
- One subscription across phone and desktop: compare Wispr Flow and Aqua Voice; Wispr Flow alternatives lays out their costs over three years.
Where Voice Monkeys fits
Voice Monkeys is narrower than Superwhisper: no model picker, no translation, no phone app, no file transcription. What it offers is one gesture. Hold right Option on a Mac or right Alt on Windows and Linux, speak, let go, and the text is typed at the cursor in any app; a quick tap switches to hands-free until the next tap, and Esc cancels.
On M1 and newer Macs the speech model runs on the Neural Engine and works offline after a download of about 600 MB, for $25 once with a 7-day trial and no card. On Windows, Linux and Intel Macs it costs $12 a month or $96 a year and includes 90 hours of dictation a month; audio goes encrypted to a server in Falkenstein, Germany, is converted in memory and discarded. The Windows and Linux builds are new, so SmartScreen may warn on install. If that fits your setup, download Voice Monkeys and compare it with Superwhisper on your own writing.
What to test side by side
- Run both apps for a full working day, not one sentence. Switching cost is about habits as much as recognition.
- If you are bilingual, dictate a mixed sentence such as: 'Send the Angebot to Klaus by Friday and copy Marta on the Polish version.' Voice Monkeys recognises languages by ear and allows mixing; check how your chosen Superwhisper model handles the same line.
- Time the gap between releasing the key and seeing text, once on battery and once plugged in.
- Turn off Wi-Fi to see which of your setups still work.
- Check the activation key does not clash with shortcuts you already use; Voice Monkeys can switch to Fn or right Command on a Mac.
- Keep a list of words each tool gets wrong. Product names and surnames are the usual offenders, and the list tells you more than any review.
Questions and answers
Is Superwhisper free?
It has a Free tier that, per its page, includes unlimited Whisper models and 100+ languages. Pro is paid and adds cloud and local AI models and translation into English; check their page for the current price.
What is a good Superwhisper alternative for an Intel Mac?
The Voice Monkeys cloud plan ($12 a month or $96 a year) is built for Intel Macs, and macOS Dictation is free. Wispr Flow and Aqua Voice list Mac support; confirm Intel on their pages. VoiceInk needs Apple Silicon.
Is there a Superwhisper alternative for Linux?
Of the tools compared here, Voice Monkeys is the one that lists Linux. It works in X11 sessions, not Wayland.
Which alternative is open source?
VoiceInk says it is built in public on GitHub. Its page does not name the licence, so check the repository if that matters to you.
