The best dictation app for your Mac depends on one line in About This Mac
On a Mac, the right dictation app is decided less by brand than by hardware. An M-series Mac can run a speech model locally and quickly; an Intel Mac usually cannot do that well, which pushes you toward cloud tools and subscriptions. So start by checking your chip, then work through price model, privacy and the keyboard shortcut you will press hundreds of times a day.
Step one: find out which chip your Mac has
Click the Apple menu and choose About This Mac. The first lines show either Chip (Apple M1, M2, M3, M4 and so on) or Processor (an Intel Core model). That single line changes which apps are worth trying.
Apple Silicon chips include a Neural Engine for machine learning tasks, and local speech models are written with that hardware in mind. Superwhisper's own site puts the Intel side plainly: Intel Macs work best with its cloud models, and offline models only run really well on Apple Silicon. VoiceInk goes further and requires Apple Silicon with macOS 14.4 or newer. If you are on Intel, read the section for you below before buying anything.
Mac dictation apps compared
| App | Apple Silicon | Intel Mac | Price model |
|---|---|---|---|
| macOS Dictation | Yes, can run on device | Yes | Free, part of macOS |
| VoiceInk | Yes, on device (macOS 14.4+) | Not supported | $25 once (1 Mac), $39 (2), $49 (3) |
| Superwhisper | Local Whisper models or cloud | Cloud models recommended | Free tier; Pro, see their page |
| Wispr Flow | Yes | See their page | Free with weekly cap; Pro $15/month or $12/month yearly |
| Aqua Voice | Yes | See their page | Free 1,000 words; Pro $10/month yearly or $12 monthly |
| Voice Monkeys | On device, Neural Engine (macOS 14+) | Cloud subscription | $25 once on Apple Silicon; $12/month or $96/year on Intel |
One-time purchase or subscription
Mac users have something Windows users mostly do not: real one-time options. VoiceInk sells a lifetime licence from $25 for one Mac, and Voice Monkeys costs $25 once for one Apple Silicon Mac, with all updates to version 1. Both make sense if you dictate on one machine and do not need a phone app. The arithmetic is simple: at $12 a month, a subscription passes the cost of a one-time licence in the third month.
Subscriptions earn their price when you want the same tool across devices. Wispr Flow, Superwhisper and Aqua Voice all list iOS and Android apps next to the Mac one, so you can dictate on a laptop and keep the habit on the phone. If you are leaning toward no recurring payment at all, compare the refund terms too: VoiceInk offers 14 days, Superwhisper says 30 days on all plans, and Voice Monkeys 14 days without questions.
One more thing to check on a one-time licence is how many Macs it covers. VoiceInk's tiers are priced per number of Macs. A Voice Monkeys licence covers one Mac and can be moved to a new one when you upgrade.
Local processing: what it means and how to confirm it
“Local” means the speech model runs on your Mac and your audio never leaves it. That matters if you dictate client notes, unreleased work or anything you would rather not upload. It also means dictation keeps working on a plane or a hotel network that blocks half the internet.
You do not have to take any vendor's word for it. After installing an app and downloading its model, turn off Wi-Fi from the menu bar and dictate a paragraph into Notes. If text appears, the model is local. For macOS Dictation itself, Apple says the Keyboard settings show whether your dictation is processed on the device or sent to Siri servers, and you can decide whether to share audio recordings with Apple.
Local models are downloaded once and take disk space. VoiceInk uses local models; Voice Monkeys downloads its speech model once, about 600 MB, and runs it on the Neural Engine. Superwhisper lets you choose between local Whisper models and cloud models. Wispr Flow and Aqua Voice do not say on their pricing pages where speech is processed, so check their documentation if it matters to you.
If you have an Intel Mac
Be realistic: the strongest local-model experiences are built for Apple Silicon. Your practical choices are macOS Dictation (free, try it first), a cloud-based app, or a tool whose cloud mode is recommended for Intel. Voice Monkeys on Intel runs as the same cloud subscription used on Windows and Linux: $12 a month or $96 a year, 90 hours of dictation a month, audio sent encrypted to a server in Germany, converted in memory and discarded. If your Intel Mac is due for replacement anyway, it may be worth waiting and buying a one-time licence on the new machine instead.
Hotkeys: the detail that decides whether you keep using it
You will press the dictation key more than any other shortcut, so it deserves thought. There are two styles. Push-to-talk means you hold a key while speaking and release to finish; it is precise, never leaves a microphone running by accident, and suits short messages. Toggle means one press starts and another stops; it suits long paragraphs when you want your hands free.
macOS Dictation lets you use the Microphone key, pick a shortcut in System Settings > Keyboard > Dictation, or set a custom one such as Option-Z. Pick a key that is easy to find without looking and does nothing else on its own. The right-hand modifier keys are good candidates because most people rarely use them.
Voice Monkeys uses push-to-talk on the right Option key by default, with Fn or right Command as alternatives in settings. A quick tap switches to hands-free dictation until the next tap, and Esc cancels what you just said. If you prefer a fully toggled workflow everywhere, try a couple of apps and see which shortcut model feels natural after a day.
A two-day trial plan for Mac users
- Day one: use macOS Dictation for everything you type in Mail, Messages and Notes. Write down each time it stopped, misheard a name or got in your way.
- Day two: install one local app (VoiceInk or Voice Monkeys on Apple Silicon) and one cross-device app if you need a phone app. Repeat the same tasks.
- Dictate one real paragraph from your work, for example: “Hi Priya, the build for version 3.2 is ready, but the export to PDF still crops page 7. Can we move the review to Thursday at 4?”
- Test with Wi-Fi off, with headphones on, and while a video call app is open, because microphone switching is where many Mac setups fail.
- Keep the one you reached for without thinking. Our overview of all dictation apps has the full test script.
If built-in dictation turns out to be enough, our step-by-step Mac dictation guide shows how to tune it. If you also work on a PC, the Windows buyer's guide covers the other side, and the Wispr Flow alternatives page helps if you are moving off a subscription. Voice Monkeys has a 7-day trial without a card on Apple Silicon; you can download it here.
Questions and answers
What is the best dictation app for an M1, M2 or M3 Mac?
If you want local processing and a one-time price, VoiceInk and Voice Monkeys both fit; if you also need a phone app, look at Wispr Flow, Superwhisper or Aqua Voice. Test two with your own vocabulary before deciding.
Is there a good dictation app for Intel Macs?
Try macOS Dictation first. Beyond that, cloud-based tools are the practical choice: Superwhisper recommends its cloud models on Intel, and Voice Monkeys runs as a cloud subscription there. VoiceInk does not support Intel.
Is there a Mac dictation app without a subscription?
Yes. VoiceInk and Voice Monkeys on Apple Silicon are both one-time purchases starting at $25. macOS Dictation is free.
Which Mac dictation apps keep audio on the device?
VoiceInk and Voice Monkeys on Apple Silicon run speech recognition locally, Superwhisper offers local models, and macOS Dictation can process on the device depending on language and settings. Confirm any app by dictating with Wi-Fi off.
Can I change the dictation shortcut on a Mac?
For built-in Dictation, go to System Settings > Keyboard > Dictation > Shortcut and choose a preset or Customize. Dedicated apps set their own hotkeys in their settings.
